9.1 Bei uns oder bei euch?


  1. It was Max’s idea that we take part there. At first I thought it wouldn’t be much fun. After all, we always have guests in the restaurant and cook for strangers.
    Es war die Idee von Max, dass wir dort mitmachen. Ich habe erst gedacht, dass das nicht besonders viel Spaß macht. Wir haben im Restaurant ja auch immer Gäste und kochen für fremde Leute.

  2. But it was still very funny. We really got to know nice people.
    Es war aber trotzdem sehr lustig. Wir haben wirklich nette Leute kennengelernt.

  1. In the group there were two colleagues who work as teachers at the same school. The other couple was married. They are already over 70 years old and retired.
    In der Gruppe waren zwei Kollegen, die als Lehrer in der gleichen Schule arbeiten. Das andere Paar war verheiratet. Sie sind schon über 70 Jahre alt und Rentner.

  2. Unfortunately, we have only met twice so far because the retired woman was sick last week. But we will meet again next week.
    Leider haben wir uns erst zweimal getroffen, weil die Rentnerin letzte Woche krank war. Aber wir treffen uns nächste Woche wieder.

  1. At first it was a bit boring. The others in the group were not very interesting. They were all retired and most of them were very old. I couldn’t really talk to them; everyone only wanted to talk about illnesses. But I still quite liked the whole day. The city tour was a bit too long, but very interesting. Unfortunately, the weather was quite bad.
    Am Anfang war es etwas langweilig. Die anderen in der Gruppe waren nicht so interessant. Alle waren Rentner und die meisten waren sehr alt. Ich konnte mich gar nicht unterhalten, alle wollten nur über Krankheiten sprechen. Aber der ganze Tag hat mir trotzdem ziemlich gut gefallen. Die Stadtführung war ein bisschen zu lang, aber sie war sehr interessant. Leider war das Wetter ziemlich schlecht.

  2. Then I was in a restaurant. I met a very nice man, Jacques. I really enjoyed talking with him. He is a very interesting man. The food was not particularly good, but that was no longer important.
    Dann war ich in einem Restaurant. Ich habe einen sehr netten Mann kennengelernt, Jacques. Mit ihm habe ich mich wirklich gut unterhalten. Er ist ein sehr interessanter Mann. Das Essen war nicht besonders gut, aber das war dann nicht mehr wichtig.

  1. Kochfreunde (Cooking Friends)
    Do you want to meet new people again? Do you like cooking? Then “Kochfreunde” is exactly right for you. Whether alone, couples, good friends, or nice colleagues: everyone can join. You can register online and choose a day for dinner in the calendar. If you register alone, you will get a partner for the evening. Each team consists of two people who also cook together. Two other teams, meaning four guests, come to the apartment and everyone eats together. The following week everyone meets at the next team, and in the third week at the third team. This way, strangers quickly become friends.
    Kochfreunde: Du möchtest mal wieder neue Leute kennenlernen? Du kochst gern? Dann bist du bei den „Kochfreunden“ genau richtig. Egal, ob allein, Paare, gute Freunde oder nette Kollegen: Jeder kann bei uns mitmachen. Man kann sich online anmelden und im Kalender einen Tag für das Abendessen aussuchen. Wer sich alleine anmeldet, bekommt einen Partner für den Abend. Zu jedem Team gehören zwei Personen, die auch zusammen kochen. Zwei andere Teams, also vier fremde Gäste, kommen in die Wohnung und alle essen zusammen. In der nächsten Woche treffen sich alle beim nächsten Team und in der dritten Woche beim dritten Team. So werden aus Fremden schnell Freunde.

    Tarek: Was hätten Sie gern?

  2. Guest: I would like the fish with rice.
    Gast: Ich hätte gern den Fisch mit Reis.

  3. Tarek: And what would you like to drink?
    Tarek: Und was möchten Sie trinken?

  4. Guest: I’m not sure yet. I would like to look at the menu again.
    Gast: Ich weiß noch nicht. Ich würde gern noch einmal in die Speisekarte schauen.

  5. Tarek: Of course. Here is the menu.
    Tarek: Gern. Hier ist die Karte.

  6. Guest: Thank you. I’ll take the dry white wine.
    Gast: Danke. Ich nehme den trockenen Weißwein.

  1. Tarek: What would you like?
    Tarek: Was hätten Sie denn gern?

  2. Guest: I would like the pasta. I would also like a glass of wine.
    Gast: Ich hätte gern die Nudeln. Dazu würde ich gern ein Glas Wein trinken.

  3. Tarek: Red or white wine?
    Tarek: Möchten Sie Rotwein oder Weißwein?

  4. Guest: I would like red wine.
    Gast: Ich hätte gern Rotwein.

  1. Inge is on an excursion in the mountains.
    Inge ist auf dem Ausflug in den Bergen.

  2. Inge did not find the others in the group interesting at all.
    Inge fand die anderen aus der Gruppe gar nicht interessant.

  3. Inge found the city tour a bit too long and very interesting. (corrected contradiction: “nicht” is missing in German original; meaning intended is “a bit too long but very interesting”)

  4. She did not really enjoy talking with Jacques. (correction based on German: “nicht besonders gut” = not very well)

Info: Inge says "Der Rest der Gruppe stand mit einem Bein im Grab". This is an expression that loosely means "They were very old and not fit anymore". Translated literally it means "They stood with one leg in the grave". 


Careful! "Etwas" is mostly used with negative adjectives, like "etwas langweilig", or descriptions with "zu", like "etwas zu viel". It isn't suitable for positive adjectives like "schön".


New words: Many bars hold "Stammtische", a periodical meeting of friends or an open gathering of people that share an interest.


Careful! The word "Partner" has two meanings. In this text, it means "partner/someone you work with". It can also mean "life partner".
