10.1 Stadt oder Land?
Dear Sarah,
City life is getting on my nerves right now. In front of my bike shop, it is just as noisy as at an airport. One major disadvantage is really the traffic right outside my door. There are so many cars, and the air quality is so poor.

das Großstadtleben nervt mich gerade. Vor meinem Fahrradladen ist es genauso laut wie auf einem Flughafen. Ein großer Nachteil ist wirklich der Verkehr vor meiner Tür. Es gibt so viele Autos und die Luft ist so schlecht.
And on top of that, the rent for the shop is so high. In the countryside, I could probably rent a larger shop than this one for the same amount of money.
Und dann ist die Miete für den Laden auch noch so hoch. Auf dem Land kann ich bestimmt für das gleiche Geld ein größeres Geschäft als diesen Laden mieten.
I think everything is better in the countryside. I'm going to find out how much apartments in the countryside cost. Maybe I will really like it more there than in the city.

Ich glaube, auf dem Land ist alles besser. Ich informiere mich mal, wie viel die Wohnungen auf dem Land kosten. Vielleicht finde ich es auf dem Land wirklich schöner als in der Stadt.

Lola: I think a weekend in a large garden is nicer than on a small balcony. Besides, I like how quiet it is here in the countryside. In Hamburg I was also more afraid than here in the village.
Lola: Ein Wochenende im großen Garten finde ich schöner als auf einem kleinen Balkon. Außerdem mag ich, dass es bei uns auf dem Land so ruhig ist! In Hamburg hatte ich auch mehr Angst als hier im Dorf.
Simon: In the countryside, everyone knows everyone and everyone talks about everyone. Terrible! Life in the countryside is simply boring because there are no cultural activities. There are only the football club and the volunteer fire department. That's a real disadvantage!
Simon: Auf dem Land kennt jeder jeden und alle reden über alle. Furchtbar! Auf dem Land ist es einfach langweilig, weil es kein Kulturprogramm gibt. Da sind nur der Fußballverein und die freiwillige Feuerwehr. Das ist ein echter Nachteil!
Tina: For me, clean air, space, and nature are important. In big cities there is simply much more dirt and noise than in the countryside. And very many people are looking for apartments. That's pure stress.
Tina: Für mich sind gute Luft, Platz und Natur wichtig. In Großstädten gibt es einfach viel mehr Dreck und Lärm als auf dem Land. Und sehr viele Menschen suchen Wohnungen. Das ist Stress pur.
Pierre: When we had children, life in the countryside had only advantages. They could play outside and we had a lot of space. Now the children no longer live with us. We moved to the city because there we can quickly reach everything using different means of transportation and no longer need a car.
Pierre: Mit Kindern hatte das Leben auf dem Land nur Vorteile. Sie konnten draußen spielen und wir hatten viel Platz. Jetzt wohnen die Kinder nicht mehr bei uns. Wir sind in die Stadt gezogen, weil wir dort alles schnell mit den verschiedenen Verkehrsmitteln erreichen können und kein Auto mehr brauchen.

Interviewer: Frank and Julia, you moved from the countryside to the city two months ago. How are things going for you in Stuttgart?
Interviewer: Frank und Julia, ihr seid vor zwei Monaten vom Land in die Stadt gezogen. Wie geht’s euch denn in Stuttgart?
Frank: Really well! There is always something going on here, even in the evenings and on weekends. There are so many cultural activities that you can't even decide.
Frank: Total gut! Hier ist immer was los, auch abends und am Wochenende. Es gibt so viele kulturelle Angebote, dass man sich gar nicht entscheiden kann.
Julia: Yes, and we don't need a car anymore. We use the subway and commuter train. The connections are very good. That's a big advantage.
Julia: Ja, und wir brauchen kein Auto mehr. Wir fahren mit der U-Bahn oder S-Bahn. Die Verbindungen sind sehr gut. Das ist ein großer Vorteil.
Frank: Everything was more difficult in the countryside. I had to drive to work in Stuttgart by car, was always stuck in traffic, and gasoline was expensive too. We save a lot of money and time here.
Frank: Auf dem Land war das alles schwieriger. Ich musste mit dem Auto zur Arbeit nach Stuttgart fahren, stand immer im Stau, und das Benzin war auch teuer. Wir sparen hier viel Geld und Zeit.
Julia: Well, not that much. Our rent is very high, and finding an apartment was a real problem. We don't even know our new neighbors yet. Everything here is rather impersonal.
Julia: Na ja, so viel auch nicht. Unsere Miete ist sehr hoch und die Wohnungssuche war ein echtes Problem. Wir kennen unsere neuen Nachbarn auch noch gar nicht. Hier ist alles eher unpersönlich.
Frank: Oh, I don't think that's so bad.
Frank: Och, das finde ich gar nicht so schlimm.
Julia: And the house rules in our apartment building are annoying. Between one and three o'clock we're not allowed to listen to loud music. In our own house in the countryside, that didn't matter.
Julia: Und die Hausordnung in unserem Mietshaus nervt. Zwischen eins und drei dürfen wir keine laute Musik hören. In unserem eigenen Haus auf dem Land war das egal.
