Reflexive pronouns can be used with two different verbs:
- Reflexive verbs
- Accusative: the subject and the object of the verb are one and the same; the reflexive pronoun means "oneself".
E.g: Ich wasche mich. (the relexive pronoun comes after the verb) = I wash myself. / Me lavo. - Dative:If there is a second object in the sentence; it becomes the direct object, and the reflexive pronoun takes the dative form, seving as the indirect object.
E.g: Ich wasche mir die Haare. = I wash my hair. / Me lavo mi pelo. - When there are two ponouns: the object pronoun (refers to the person or thing receiving the action) is placed before the reflexive pronoun. E.g:
Ich wasche sie (object pronoun #1) mir (reflexive pronoun #2).= I wasch it. / Me la lavo. - Subordinate clause:
- Ich entspanne mich, während ich (subject) mir (the relexive pronoun comes after the subject) einen Film anschaue (the verb comes at the end). = I relax while I watch a movie. ("I relax" is the main clause; "while I watch a movie" is the subordinate clause)
- während = while
- entspannen = relax
- anschauen = look
- Reciprocal verbs in plural, reflexive pronouns mean "each other".
E.g: Wir kennen uns. = We know each other. / Nos conocemos.
